Philemon 1:1

Paul opens without his usual apostolic title. In letters where his authority was questioned he leads with “apostle,” but here, writing to a friend and planning to ask rather than order, he calls himself “a prisoner of Jesus Christ.” The chain was real; he was under guard, most likely in Rome awaiting his hearing before Caesar (Acts 28:16, 30). Yet the phrase explains whose prisoner he is. Rome held the keys, but Christ’s cause had placed him there, and Christ’s purpose governed even his confinement. There is also fitting pathos in the title: a man whose own movements are controlled by another is about to plead for a slave whose life was legally owned by his master.

Timothy is joined to the greeting as “our brother.” Philemon probably knew him from the long ministry in Ephesus, only a few days’ journey from Colossae (Acts 19:10, 22). Timothy is not presented as a coauthor so much as a companion who shares the concern and adds his presence to the request. His title also introduces the family vocabulary that runs through the whole letter. “Brother” will be applied to Philemon (Philemon 1:7, 20) and then, decisively, to Onesimus (Philemon 1:16). Paul establishes a household word before he asks Philemon to extend it to someone new.

Philemon is “our dearly beloved, and fellowlabourer.” The first term speaks of affection, the second of shared service. Philemon had likely come to faith through Paul (Philemon 1:19), and he had since put his home and resources to work for the gospel in his city. Paul is not flattering him. He names what is true and what the coming appeal will rest upon. Before Philemon hears what is asked of him, he is reminded that he stands inside a circle of love and labor whose center is Christ, and that every request made within that circle comes from those who belong to the same Lord.

Word / Phrase Notes

δέσμιος Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ (desmios Christou Iēsou) — a prisoner of Jesus Christ

Desmios is a person in bonds, a literal prisoner. The genitive identifies the one to whom Paul belongs in his imprisonment: he is held for Christ’s sake and under Christ’s ownership, so that his chains become part of his service rather than a defeat of it.

συνεργῷ (synergō) — fellowlabourer

A coworker, one who works alongside another in a common task. Paul uses it for those who shared actively in gospel work, whether traveling with him or building up local churches, and it places Philemon on the same level as Paul’s trusted associates.
